WHEN YOU BUY A DIAMOND YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE CUT IS VERY GOOD OR EXCELLENT. WHY?
If a diamond is cut in “ideal proportions,” the stone will bend light and reflect it, creating the so-called sparkle of colored flashes that make up fire. The result is that when you move your finger your stone will shine very brightly.
In fact, every single facet contributes to the exaltation of its beauty, so much so that well-cut diamonds are more brilliant than less cared for ones. In a brilliant cut diamond, the correct combinations between the percentage of the table, the angles of the crown and the pavilion are fundamental factors in enhancing the brilliance , i.e. the effect originating from the internal and external reflection of the light.
There are five cutting grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor . The final evaluation of the degree of Cut is determined by proportions (symmetry) and finish (polish).
The diamonds which, with the other quality parameters being equal ( Carat, Colour, Clarity ), obtain Excellent in the Polish and Symmetry cut grades are naturally the most valuable.
Diamonds with low grades, Fair and Poor, are often subjected to cutting to improve their quality.
The proportions are evaluated with specific instruments, the proportionometers that we gemologists possess.
